Short notice again – if you have nothing to do *right now* and want to go hang out with geeks doing geeky and craft-ish things, there’s an option: Geek Out April started about 20 minutes ago. It’s at Burritoville, which is on Bishop and de Maisonneuve. Great veggie place to eat, by the way.
Geek out goes all afternoon. There are various things to do + board games.

Leading iPhone / Android game designer Ben Srgo is hosting a 3-day intense workshop April 16-18, amounting to 24 hours of training, on developing iPhone apps. The workshop is a “boot camp” that will save you a lot of time you’d spend figuring stuff out on your own. The price is $899 for ID-carrying students and $1,399 for everyone else. Unfortunately we’ve blown past the early bird deadline.
The idea is that by the end of the workshop you’ll be able to develop your own app and upload it to the AppStore. Wow! Cool. Yalla, I can’t imagine that this won’t fill up.

Meetup for the Montreal Javascript Usergroup tonight. Alexis Sellier will be presenting on “Node JS”, an IO framework for Javascript v8. Apparently you can use it for things that require event-driven IO, such as implementing a web server (what?). Ok, that sounds kind of cool. Too much work to do tonight. I won’t be there, but you can RSVP here.
Event starts at 7pm and will be held at the Bloom Digital offices (481 Viger Ouest).
Three things happening this week of interest (unfortunately I missed announcing the WhereCloud iPad meet-and-greet that was hosted this evening by my friend Fred):
1. StartUp Square is a soirée that will take place Tuesday evening. The idea is to introduce students to startup culture. Olivier Cabanes from Bolidea and Benjamin Yoskovitz from StandoutJobs and InstigatorBlog will be speaking. It will be held at the Thompson House (3650 McTavish) at 6pm on Tuesday, April 13. 5$ for students, 10$ for non-students. Get your tickets here.
2. MTLSEC April will be held on Wednesday, April 14. MTLSEC is an informal event for hackers, security professionals, hobbyists, students, etc. Anyone who is into network or information security. Show up around 6pm at the Old Dublin, 636 Cathcart, metro McGill. It’s free.
3. MTLNewTech is hosting an event for pitches. It’s being organized with the assistance of the city of Montreal. It’s happening on Thursday, April 15, at 303 Notre-Dame Est, starting at 6pm. It’s free, but please RSVP here.

OK – last minute, I know, but there is a post-opening party tonight at the CCA. The exhibition is “Other Space Odysseys” and it covers design, specifically architecture, I think, inspired by the 1969 moon landing and how a renewed interest in space exploration is inspiring artists and designers today. The party starts at 8, with a free drink for early arrivers between 8 and 9. DJ Truspin will be providing dubstep-ish beats and the Brille Brille collective will do the visuals. It will likely be good. I will be there around 9:30. It wraps up around 11.

Arduino used to control display (image lifted, obviously, from hacktronics.com)
This Saturday there’s a workshop being hosted at the Montreal hackerspace, Foulab. It’s an introductory workshop on the Ardurino micro-controller, but don’t let that scare you. Ardurino is a little friend that can be used by programmers and non-programmers to make speakers, motors, sensors, lights, etc, do really interesting things. For that reason it’s often used in art installations and robotics. You too can make your very own Arduino do crazy stuff.
The workshop is being hosted by Michel from Foulab and all are welcome. It takes place Saturday afternoon at 2pm. Instruction cost is 20$. Bring your own computer and Arduino (or buy one, they will be available for 50$ – Arduinos, that is, not computers). For more info, you can reach Michel via Twitter.

Tonight (Tuesday, April 6) is Montreal NewTech Demo for April. It’s a chance for startup founders to show off their stuff. It’s taking place at McKibbon’s Irish Pub on Bishop, near Concordia. It goes from 6-8pm. You can RSVP here. I won’t be there tonight as I’ve got stuff scheduled at the same time.
Tomorrow (Wednesday, April 7) there will be a seminar held covering incentive plans for startups (read: stock options, among other things). This is good stuff for anyone seriously interested in building a startup. The presenters include Startup CFO blogger Mark MacLeod. The event is free but you must RSVP. It will take place between 5:30 and 8:00

So there are (so far) three technology-scene happenings this week (but only two are new, thanks Raymond Luk and Startup Digest Montreal).
Ok – YULBiz, a business blogging organization, is holding an event sponsored by Tourisme Montreal at Jello Lounge on Ontario on March 30 (that’s tomorrow). I can’t find any mention of this event on their website, which appears to have gone stale, the most recent blog post is from Nov 2008. Anyways, there’s a Facebook event for it and @yulbiz has tweeted about it. I won’t be able to make it, as much as I’d like to. Next time.
As mentioned previously, Startup Drinks Montreal is happening on Wednesday, March 31. It will be held (as usual) at Brutopia – be there between 5:30 and 7:30 for prime time.
Finally, on Thursday, April 1, there is the social media breakfast. The breakfast will be held at B-Side Bar & Lounge on St-Laurent and will take place between 9AM and 11AM. The cost is 10$ and covers the food, which will be prepared by Chef Dana Elsliger of Griffintown’s La Bistrote. The guest of honor is Mitch Joel, author of “Six Pixels of Separation” and president of Twist Image (gosh, they make real pretty websites, but I don’t like the dairy industry – too cruel, cows are not milk machines!).
